Established in 1954, Presentation Convent Senior Secondary School, Jammu is an all-girls day school founded under the aegis of Jammu Presentation Society of Jammu & Kashmir.

Affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, the school offers education till class XII. It has successfully completed 59 years since its inception and is well reputed in the city for the high quality education it imparts.

The 10-acre school campus hosts a beautiful landscape with an attractive, uniquely designed building incorporating all modern facilities including a well-maintained biology lab, chemistry lab, computer lab, computer-aided education, first aid facility, multimedia lab and school transport.

The school provides education till class XII and follows the CBSE syllabus. The school has a dedicated teaching staff who encourage critical thinking and developing academic skills along with a spirit of compassion, so that education could be used as a tool for social change.

Extra Curriculars

The school provides opportunities to students to train in martial arts, music and dance. Students also participate in various indoor and outdoor games. Students can also be part of the school’s musical band.

The seed of Scoil Mhuire was born out of the Presentation Convent. It was the Presentation Sisters and dedicated staff that nurtured the school throughout the years. The school is now a bedrock of Clane community. Reflecting on the school’s history and unique spirit I realise how honoured and privileged I am to be Principal.

The school's curriculum is very much a reflection of its founders. Today in Scoil Mhuire we cater for everybody. The school offers a comprehensive curriculum.

Evidence of the community identification is the extraordinarily successful Adult Education programme, which offers lifelong learning opportunities to the people in Clane and the surrounding areas.

The success of the school is the partnership and respect that exists between staff, students and parents. It is the extraordinary dedication of the teachers, secretarial and caretaking staff that gives Scoil Mhuire its unique spirit. This culture of dedication is passed on to any new member of staff in the school.

Scoil Mhuire is a hive of activity outside of the very busy curriculum. An extensive range of extra curricular activities is provided for the students. Sports, drama, debating, music, young scientist, foreign travel and fundraising for charity are just some of the activities that help students develop a rounded education. Scoil Mhuire has had many successes outside the classroom.

Today the school needs to be an ever-evolving organisation meeting the needs of a multicultural society. Schools of the past were concerned with the three Rs of reading, writing, and arithmetic. These now are augmented with the three Ts of thinking, teamwork and technology and mixed with the three Cs of care, courtesy and consideration. • Scoil Mhuire works within the curriculum of the Department of Education and provides extra curricular activities aiming at the growth of the whole person.
• Students are encouraged to develop their academic, intuitive and creative gifts to enable them to live their lives to the full and contribute in a positive way to the society of which they are a part.
• The school continually re-examines its goals and objectives and responds in a creative way to the demands of changing times.

Secondary education was introduced to Clane in 1963 when the Presentation sisters established Scoil Mhuire in the convent building beside the church in the village’s main street, to fulfil the educational needs of girls in the Clane area. The first boys were admitted in 1967 and as the school enrolment increased further buildings in the village were utilised and land along the Prosperous Road was used to house prefabs.

After much campaigning and fundraising a brand new building was opened in 1983. This involved changing from a conventional type secondary school to a community school administered by a Board of Management, thus formally bringing into existence Scoil Mhuire Community School. Since 1983 much has changed with the opening of a new extension and gym in September 2001.

Throughout the school’s existence their have been many noteworthy days. In 1971 Peter Shortt achieved the highest honour available to science students in Ireland when he won the “Young Scientist of the Year” award. Two former pupils of the school, Willie and Ted Ryan, represented Ireland at the Moscow Olympics in 1980. In 1988 the school senior football team became the fi st Kildare team to win an All-Ireland Colleges title. The Kildare team that contested the All-Ireland final ten years later, in 1998, were backboned by members of that team. In 2010, the Senior footballers reached the All-Ireland Final again, losing narrowly after a great campaign that brought a Leinster title to the school.

Many prominent people attended the school including the Hall of Fame inductees who grace the walls of the Assembly Area. Dr. Elizabeth Higgins who graduated from Scoil Mhuire in 1978, has worked throughout the developing world, particularly in the area of education. She is Head of Development Cooperation Ireland. Dr. Frank Mulligan was a member of the class of 1974 and went onto study physics before becoming Vice President of NUI Maynooth between 1998 and 2006. Eoghan Corry is a respected author and journalist who has written widely about the GAA. He graduated from Scoil Mhuire in 1978.

Other graduates have included drummer Graham Hopkins and bassist Joe Doyle, Cheltenham winning jockies Kieran Kelly (RIP) and Mark Walsh, and famous television journalist Donal Mac Intyre.

With over 1200 students and more than 80 staff and with an adult education enrolment that runs into thousands, Scoil Mhuire continues to meet the educational needs and play a key role in the life of the community of Clane and the surrounding areas.

Scoil Mhuire is governed by a Board of Management made up of democratically elected members. The Board has representatives from the Trustees, Teachers and Parents. Trustees Joint trusteeship is vested in the Department of Education and Science, Kildare Wicklow ETB. and the Presentation Sisters Northern Province. Novodevichy Convent: Moscow’s best-known monastery (PHOTOS)

At the end of the 19th century, Novodevichy Convent stood lonely in the middle of a field in the western outskirts of Moscow…

Now, dense urban districts have emerged around it; roads and overpasses were built. The place itself is now considered practically the center of the city and an elite district.

The full name of the cloister is the ‘Moscow Bogoroditse-Smolensky Novodevichy Stavropegial Convent’. It was founded in May 1524 by Grand Prince Vasili III (the father of Ivan the Terrible). The occasion for this was the reconquering of the city of Smolensk by Russia in the course of the Lithuanian-Muscovite War of 1512-1522 – the city that, for more than a century, was in the possession of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The monastery was consecrated in honor of the main relic of Smolensk – the icon Our Lady of Smolensk ‘Hodegetria’.

The new cloister was built on a bend in the Moscow River; historically, this area was called the ‘Maiden’s Field’ (According to legend, young women were gathered here who were then sent along with tribute to the Mongol-Tatars). ‘Novodevichy’ means ‘new women’s’ monastery; that’s because there already was another monastery, the Conception Convent, in the region of the Maiden’s Field.

The main and the oldest cathedral of the monastery is dedicated to the ‘Our Lady of Smolensk’ icon. The architect of the cathedral is not exactly known, but since the cathedral is reminiscent of the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, it’s often attributed to Italian architects who worked on the Kremlin ensemble (in particular to Aloisio the New).

During a raid of the Crimean Khan in the 15th century, the monastery was hit by a large fire; the decision was then made to reinforce the monastery that stood on the western border of Moscow; and it was encircled by a strong wall with merlons and arrow slits, which was unusual for a nunnery.  

The fortress wall of the monastery resembles the shape of an irregular triangle (one of its corners is beveled, mirroring the outline of the Novodevichy pond). The perimeter of the wall features 12 fortress towers.

Under Ivan the Terrible, the monastery would unofficially bear the name of the “court” monastery – the widows of the Grand Prince family would be “exiled” there (for example, the widow of his son Ivan, whom Ivan the Terrible allegedly killed , at least according to Ilya Repin).

Later, even Tsaritsa Irina Godunova, the widow of Feodor Ioannovich, lived there. The chambers of Irina Godunova are considered one of the oldest buildings of the monastery.

They’re adjacent to Saint Ambrose’s Church built at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries.

It was in this monastery Irina’s brother, Boris Godunov, accepted his ascension as the tsar; he favored the monastery, where his sister was a nun, quite a lot, allocating a lot of funds for it from the treasury. Later, a lot of high-ranking nuns from noble boyar and prince families lived in the monastery, as well, and it was maintained on treasury money. In the 17th century, Tatiana, the sister of Peter the Great, lived there as a nun, as well as his first spouse, Eudoxia Lopukhina.

During the ‘Time of Troubles’ and the Polish intervention, the monastery was in the heat of battles and was practically ravaged and ransacked. Many other churches and chambers were built later – at the end of the 17th century, under the Romanovs. For example, the Baroque-style Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior over the northern gate, which is the first to greet anyone visiting the monastery.

At the end of the 17th century, the Church of the Assumption and a refectory for it were built.

In 1690, a Baroque-style bell tower was erected. Later, the monastery gained several more administrative buildings and chambers.

Tsarevna Sophia , the older sister of Peter the Great and his regent, spent her last days in the monastery. She, as many other high-ranked nuns, was buried in the Smolensky Cathedral. In total, more than 50 nuns of tsar, prince, and boyar blood are buried in the podklet (non-residential ground floor) of the cathedral.

Gradually, not only nuns, but also simply noble Moscow denizens were buried within the monastery walls; a whole necropolis formed on the territory of the cloister (by the beginning of the 20th century, it had almost 3,000 graves).

The neo-Gothic style chapel-tomb of the manufacturers, the Prokhorovs, was built in the 1910s – it’s one of the last new buildings of the monastery.

As such, in 1898, a Novodevichy cemetery was established outside the monastery walls, which became the burial site for many of the Soviet elite (to this day, it remains one of the most “prestigious” cemeteries, where only very famous and important people are buried).

Today, the Novodevichy Convent and the park near the Novodevichy pond is one of the Moscow denizens’ favorite places for walks.
